Coating Operations is a specialised trade that is utilized in several sectors across Trinidad and Tobago. Coating systems can protect equipment and personnel, extend the life of facilities, reduce noise, reduce energy and operating costs.  

Generally, the Blasting and Coating Applicator’s role covers a range of activities; from setting up and testing equipment, removal of corrosion and application of coatings as well as the inspection, planning and maintenance of coating systems are carried out as instructed. The blasting and coating team should be aware of health and safety requirements to prevent damage to equipment, the environment and injury or fatalities.

In addition, the Superintendent role covers the knowledge and understanding of applicable regulations, standards, equipment and systems, physical sciences, engineering principles and efficiency and environmental safety. Essential competencies include communicating effectively with employees, estimating jobs, as well as supervising and managing the blasting and coating team.

The Coating Assistant / Helper is a supervised worker that prepares the work area, tools and equipment for basic surface preparation and coating operations.
This includes performing basic surface preparation, preparation and application of coating materials on substrates according to supervisor’s instructions. 
He or she must also be able to follow health, safety and environmental procedures, respond to hazards and emergencies in the workplace and maintain an effective work environment.

Competencies Required

*   Ability to understand, maintain and apply health, safety and environmental regulations, legislation and procedures in the workplace.

*   Must be able to identify potential hazards and take appropriate action to minimise the risks posed. It also includes identifying and dealing with  

     emergency situations.

*   Capability to establish and maintain productive work relationships and communicate work related information.

*   Must be able to prepare the work area as well as tools, equipment and materials for surface preparation and coating operations.

*   Must be able to store materials, tools and equipment after use as well as restore the work area after coating activities.

*   Ability to perform manual handling and lifting.

*   Ability to maintain safe access and egress during surface preparation and coating operations.

*   Must be able to perform basic surface preparation using hand and power tools in accordance to workplace procedures.

*   Ability to mix and apply coating materials in accordance with supervisor’s instructions.

The Coating Applicator/ Blaster is a skilled worker that is responsible for removing corrosion and replacing protective coating on substrates. Coating Applicator/ Blaster operates specialised tools and equipment which they should be able to maintain or repair. He or she must also be able to understand and apply Product Data Sheet Specifications.

He or she must also be able to complete technical reports and other documentation as well as maintain an effective work environment by following health and safety requirements when performing tasks.

Competencies Required

*   Ability to understand, maintain and apply health, safety and environmental regulations, legislation and procedures in the workplace.

*   Must be able to identify potential hazards and take appropriate action to minimise the risks posed. It also includes identifying and dealing with emergency situations.

*   Capability to establish and maintain productive work relationships and communicate work related information.

*   Ability to complete technical reports as well as other documentation in line with project specifications and company procedures.

*   Must be able to set up and perform pre-use check on abrasive blast equipment 

*   Ability to perform Advanced Surface Preparation using abrasive blast equipment 

*   Ability to verify surface preparation is prepared according to job specifications

*   Ability to verify coating materials manufacturer’s labels according to job specifications

*   Ability to prepare coating materials according to Product Data Sheet Specifications

*   Must be able to set up and perform pre-use check on sprayed painting equipment 

*   Ability to apply coating materials using sprayed painting equipment

*   Must be able to set up and perform pre-use check on water jetting equipment

The Blasting and Coating Supervisor performs a broad range of functions that includes supervising the Surface Preparation and Coating services carried out by the work crew. He/she examine and inspect work progress, quality, estimate projects, monitor team performance against work plans and schedules as well as verify the safety of the work area and to ensure that specifications are met.

He/she is responsible for treating with conflicts, coaching, mentoring and training of workers to follow guidelines for health, safety and environment as well as operational aspects.

The Superintendent is responsible for managing and directing the operations of blasting and coating including all supplies as per specifications, as well as supervisory responsibility for workers. He/she is responsible for preparing and interpreting method statements, quality plans and work procedures, conforming to product data sheets, engineering drawings and specifications, cost control, scheduling of work as well as maintaining positive working relationships with clients, suppliers, engineers and jobsite staff.

The manager is responsible for managing all aspects within blasting and coating operations and reducing operating costs, mitigating the risk of harm by effective work planning and environmental impact. He/she prepares work specifications, budgeting jobs and approves inspection documents, drawings and project closed out documents. Additionally, he/she reviews the quality documents generated from the field to ensure they conform to specifications.

The manager is also seen as a technical expert in blasting and coating and is able to perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
